What is Detox?
Detoxification or Detox for short is the removal of toxic substances from the body. There are various types of detoxification, for an addict this is the period of withdrawal during which a person's body attempts to return to a stable or normal functioning balance after long-term use. This at times must be done under medical management, especially if the individual has underlying severe health problems or is prone to seizures, Parallax evaluates these situations on a case by case basis and will make referrals for medical care as needed.
A symptom of addiction is to fear detoxification. The mind and body have gotten so used to the substance(s) that they resist even the thought of ridding the system of them. Fear is a very strong emotion but normally, it turns out that the fear of detox is often worse than the actual experience. An addicts mind conjures up all sorts of outdated and mythical information so that there is a resistence in going. The only way to conquer this is by realizing that this happens and by becoming educated about what really happens during detox.
Detox is not a treatment for addiction, other treatments must be undergone to deal with the underlying addiction that causes the use. Detox is one step in the entire process of beating the addiction. It is a very important step, but it is just one. Becoming free of an addiction is a process that will take time and commitment. It is a process that can help individuals reclaim their lives. Dont' stop with detox. Follow it through and stay on the journey to being drug and alcohol free.
Individuals not only rid their bodies of the harmful substances but are also able to discover what triggered the addiction in the first place. Years of of addiction take a toll on a person's body and mind. Only once you are rid of the addiction can one see the affects it has had on their lives and the lives of others. |
